Costs vary depending on the type of evaluation and your insurance coverage.
Without insurance, fees range from $1,500 to $2,150+. The fee includes the initial meeting, testing sessions, materials, feedback session, and written report. The fee for private school admissions and giftedness testing is $450.
With insurance, fees vary significantly depending on your plan, deductible, copay, and the type of testing your child needs. Depending on these factors, your out-of-pocket costs for an evaluation could be as low as $200-$300 or as much as $2100.

Yes, we are one of the few practices in Richmond that accept insurance for evaluations. We are in-network with Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield plans (excluding Medicaid and Medicare). For all other insurance providers, we are out-of-network but can provide documentation for you to submit to your insurance company for reimbursement through your out-of-network benefits. Please note that insurance does not cover educational testing, gifted testing or private school entrance testing.

We usually have openings for the initial appointment within two weeks of receiving your completed evaluation inquiry form. During this appointment, we’ll schedule the testing sessions. It is difficult to give an estimate of the timing of these sessions because it depends on our current availability, your child’s schedule, and the time of year. Sometimes, we can get you in as soon as a week or two following the initial appointment, but during busier periods, it might be a month or two before the testing takes place. The final step of the process, the feedback session, is typically scheduled within two weeks after the testing is completed.

We understand that you may want to schedule testing as soon as possible, but the initial appointment is an important first step. This meeting allows us to determine the number of testing sessions your child needs by gathering detailed background information and discussing your concerns.
Additionally, the initial appointment gives us the opportunity to explain the testing process in detail. Sometimes, after learning more about the process, families decide that testing may not be necessary or isn't the right fit for their needs at this time. In other cases, once we learn more about your child, we have different recommendations that better address your concerns.
By scheduling the testing sessions during the initial appointment, we can ensure that you are fully informed and that the evaluation is tailored to your child’s specific needs.

If your primary concern is Autism or Aspergers (ASD), we recommend seeking a practice specializing in ASD assessment. However, if you have concerns about ADHD or a learning disability in addition to ASD, we can conduct our evaluation and include a screening for ASD. If further testing for ASD is recommended, we’ll refer you to a trusted provider for additional assessment.

We typically test children and teens up to age 18. While we don't test adults, we can accommodate college students with ADHD or learning concerns. We generally start ADHD and learning evaluations at age six but can test children as young as 5 in certain cases. We can evaluate children as young as three for private school entrance testing.
-
Initial Appointment: A one-hour meeting with parents to gather background information, discuss the testing process, and schedule testing sessions. This can be virtual or in-person.
Testing Sessions: Your child comes into the office for one or two sessions that last 2-3 hours each and take place on different days.
Follow-up Appointment: A one-hour meeting to review the results, which can be virtual or in-person. We can also arrange a separate time to review results with your child.
Written Report: You will receive a detailed written report following the feedback session.
For giftedness or private school admission testing, the process involves one appointment. Your child is tested for an hour to an hour and a half, and the results are reviewed with parents immediately afterward.

You can explain to your child that the testing is designed to help them learn more about their strengths and weaknesses, understand how they best learn and assist you in understanding how to support them. Let them know that some activities will be similar to school tasks, like reading and math, while others will be different, such as puzzles and memory activities. Reassure them they can take breaks as needed and work at a comfortable pace.
-
On the day of testing, you won’t be in the room during the evaluation, so if you and your child are comfortable, you don’t need to stay on site. You are also welcome to stay in our waiting room area while your child is evaluated. You can pack a drink and a small snack for your child. Ensure they get a good night’s sleep before the evaluation and avoid late-night activities. After the testing, your child may need some time to relax, and a lunch outing can help ease the transition back to school, though every child is different.
-
After the feedback session, during which you review the results with the clinician, you will receive a written report with recommendations tailored to your child's strengths and weaknesses. We often recommend sharing this report with your child’s school and pediatrician. If needed, we can refer you to our educational consultant, who can assist with school placement decisions or help you navigate the process of obtaining services through the school.
